For the next year, I will be working on sewing together hundreds of re-usable grocery bags, re-usable produce and bulk bags as well as re-usable sandwich bags. I will be salvaging as much material as possible from second-hand stores and garage sales, putting together different sized bags with my sewing machine and stitching on a "KGNW" as a reminder. Come "Environmental Week" of 2011, I plan to be handing them out for free at local malls and grocery stores. Promoting a plastic-free tomorrow.
Yesterday we visited Bhat-Bhateni Super Store and stumbled upon a brand new environmental initiative.
Bhat-Bhateni is now encouraging shoppers to use re-usable plastic bags and is also selling re-usable branded bags. I quickly visited the Bhat-Bhateni web site and found their CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) page which says:
Thanks to reading a blog by EnviroGirl I've realized it is completely
hypocritical to bring reusable bags to the grocery store, but then put
all my veggies in individual bags! I have thought about this before but for some reason thought it was unavoidable.
So, from now on I am going to use my handy green crate and place my veggies directly into it.
No more plastic veggies bags - I have a green crate I bought at Zehrs that I am going to bring grocery shopping with me and throw all my veggies in there - naked and everything!
I live in Japan where supermarkets and local governments are taking steps to reduce the amount of plastic that consumers take home, throw away, and municipalities dispose of in either incinerators or landfills.
My martial arts teacher always tells us to flow with nature. Don't fight it.
Isn’t it annoying that even when you take the care to bring your own cloth or reusable shopping bags for grocery shopping, you come back home with your bags filled with little transparent shopping bags?
It sure bothered me, so I created something to solve this problem worth telling you about, if I may. It’s called Moukinets. They are very light & durable reusable mesh bags, specifically, but not only, for fruits, vegetables and bulk foods. They have drawstrings and are very easy to use, wash and re-use over and over again. If you want to know more, have a look at my website: www.moukisac.com tell me what you think.
