Final meetup logo 1.jpg

So, last Friday I decided to take the dive and start a meet up group focused on getting people outside into our parks throughout the Lower Mainland doing something constructive to conserve the environment!

I contacted a whole bunch of non-profits, charities and Metro Vancouver and arranged 10 events (all the way till Sept 25th 2011) to:

Tired of constantly hearing about environmental issues and feeling helpless to do anything about it? Here is a constructive way to direct your energy!

We’re a group of people from all over the Lower Mainland who get together once a month (sometimes more) to help an environmental group, non-profit organization, charity or city tackle an environmental issue that needs co-operation and teamwork to get done. Gloves and tools will be supplied as well as refreshments! If you care about the environment, this is the group for you! All ages welcome!! Some activities will include:

• Pulling invasive plants that are overtaking our native flora
• Planting of native plants/trees
• Restoring areas along a stream, river, marsh or shoreline
• Beach/River/lake clean up
• Harvesting organic fruits/veggies
• Trail building/maintenance
• Restoration of wildlife sites

What will you get out of it? Here are a few things we think you’ll get. You’ll..

• Meet like-minded people
• Feel good getting your hands dirty and being active in something you believe in
• Educate yourself about natural spaces and the environmental problems they face
• Learn first-hand about work being done in the lower mainland by different environmental groups
• Get the experience of a variety of stewardship activities
• Restore a natural space from a damaged state
• Be trained in stewardship practices
• Explore a nature space you may have never been to before
• Realise the benefits of working together with others
• Learn about environmental activities other group members are involved in
• Get physical exercise
• Have fun!

Foster sustainable communities through volunteering with new Canadians

Written by DIVERSEcity Hosts

Our communities in the lower mainland are home to the third largest population of newcomers (immigrants and refugees). Often, people new to Canada encounter fear and anxiety over beginning a new life. WE would like to change that fear into determination and hope through friendship; thus, enabling them with confidence to engage and support their community with their skills and talents. The Host Volunteer program assist newcomers in overcoming language and social barriers by providing emotional and social support through rewarding friendships.

DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society would like to invite all those who are interested to learn more about this program by attending our program orientation at the following dates and locations.

When: Wednesday November 12th and 26th Where: Kwantlen Polytechnic University (Surrey Campus) room D422 Time: 1:00 to 4 pm ( a ½ hour presentation will be given at 1, 2, and 3pm)

When: Wednesday November 19th and December 3rd Where: Simon Fraser University (Surrey Campus) room SUR 3200 ( Nov. 19th) SUR 5320 (Dec. 3) Time: 1:00 to 4 pm ( a ½ hour presentation will be given at 1, 2, and 3 pm).

Get kids thinking.

So I'm a part of a "College and Career" fellowship group at my church, right? Anyway, together as a group, we decided we wanted to do a monthly service project... pick something and stick to it. So we decided we'd head out to Main and Hastings on the first Wednesday of every month to serve food. The first time we did it was the first week of March. The next time we go is in one week on April 4th.

I want to volunteer more

There are many places in the community to volunteer.  I am getting a head start on my resolution by volunteering at the raffle table for the BC Schizophrenic Society here in Powell River.  I am also registered to volunteer at the Theraputic Riding Association for the orientation on January 3rd and 4th.  For them I would be leading the horses with people with disabilities on the horse.  It is intended as a physical as well as psychological therapy for the rider.

Got Hats? ChangeEverything.ca success story

Snowed in and working from home last Monday, I found myself shivering even though I was inside my warm home wearing down slippers. My mailbox was full of messages from friends talking about what they were going to do on their snow day - the buzz was all about toboggans and renting videos. As fun as the idea of a snow day was, I couldn’t stop thinking about some of the people in our community who are less fortunate: the ones without homes. I thought about collecting some clothes and blankets from my house and bringing them to local shelters and quickly realized that I couldn’t drive my 20 year old car with its all-season tires anywhere. I was stuck. It felt pretty awful to want to do something to help but to have barrier like this get in the way. I imagined that others were probably having a similar experience – and since I wasn’t about to be stopped, I decided to use ChangeEverything.ca as it was designed – to make some changes happen.

1 blog posting = 3 volunteers = over 4,000 items donated to local shelters in 48 hours.

It all started with one blog posting. It seemed to me that there had to be others who wanted to donate to shelters but had no way of transporting things either. So I wrote this blog post sharing my vision to get a car donated and do a round of collections to transport warm things to local shelters. Immediate response was positive. I contacted the Cooperative Auto Network (CAN) to ask them to provide a vehicle to make this happen.

TRIPLE-S (supporting students in sports)

Triple-S is a non-profit organization run by its founder, sixteen-year-old Bo Palmer. Bo has been involved with sports for most of his life, and credits athletics for playing a role in shaping him into the individual he is today: fit, focused, confident, and inspired. As a community-minded person, Bo wants to enable all disadvantaged youth (whether by family or financial problems) the opportunity to participate in sports by supplying them with good quality donated sports items.
