Change the nature of informed consent in Canada

Written by donnabarker
Change topics:

Although most families have been lead to believe that childhood vaccines are mandatory in Canada, they are not, and giving a child a shot requires the parents to provide the doctor or nurse with informed consent. Unfortunately, the majority of parents are saying "yes" to vaccines without actually being informed about the real risks and benefits of either the vaccine in question or the associated disease.

My goal in 2009 is to create an information website for parents that will not preach a position either for or against vaccination, as all current vaccine websites do, rather it will provide easy to understand, accurate and complete statistics so parents actually can feel like they are making the best decision for their child.

Please vote for my project "vaccine awareness - donnabarker" to help me win $1000 to get the website developed and online. Thank you!

I'm stoked!
Five of us changers are competing for the Viva la Resolution $1000 prize.

If I win, I'll put the money toward building a website for parents who face the great challenge of making an informed decision about kids' vaccines.

This isn't a pro-vaccine site.

This isn't an anti-vaccine site.

Vaccine attitudes survey - update

I uploaded the vaccine survey last week and asked 5 smart colleagues to give me feedback to improve it. They gave me great suggestions.

Step Four, Part 2 - survey of vaccine attitudes

First draft of the vaccine attitude survey is online now.

Take the Vaccine Attitudes survey now

I'd love for a few people to take the survey and send me feedback about it:

Is it too long?
Are the questions easy to understand?
Do the questions flow well?
Are there questions missing?

Step Four - Do research on vaccine attitudes

About a year ago I started a project to write some e-books targeted to the non-profit sector. To start, I developed an online survey to identify which topics would be most interesting to people who work and volunteer in the sector. I got great info from that survey.

Step Three - gathering more people & materials

I've long believed that in stating an intention, out loud, to a group of people - as opposed to privately in a diary or to just one friend - increases the odds of that intention actually coming to be.

After posting my blog entry this morning, I sat down to write my monthly health column for Shared Vision magazine (which, is just being rebranded as Today's Vancouver Woman).

Step Two - find a way to accept money

Things are moving forward slowly but surely, as they say.

(I'm leaving the home I've lived in for 12 years on Feb 1st, so a great deal of the time I'm not working has been focused on purging and packing).

Step One in progress - Advisory Committee

Making progress with pulling together an advisory committee for the vaccine informed consent campaign (I sure need a catchier name for this campaign... ideas?)

So far three people have agreed to support me in the project!

Childhood immunizations and informed consent - a farce

The issue is one I’ve been passionate about for 13 years – since I was pregnant - childhood vaccines and the challenge of informed consent.
