Help re-open the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital Obstetrics Program and stop the closure of small town birthing wards.

Written by chad_kerychuk

Citing a shortage of nursing staff and not wanting to jeopardize patient safety, Banff Mineral Springs Hospital has (temporarily) closed the Obstetrics Program. Because I cannot be there to physically show my support to my close friends and the community, I want to do what I can help reverse this decision and urge the Hospital, Covenant Health, the Alberta provincial government and the Calgary Health Region to re-open the ward and allow small town parents to have personal, calming hospital birthing experiences and support.

Charities that help families in the developing world typically appeal to donors with a plea to help kids. What if there was a pitch for parents to help parents?

yesterday, tina mcinerney and i did another presentation for the society for the immediate awareness of alternative learning.

quite the name, huh?

we raise awareness of the fact that people who are labeled "learning disabled", "dyslexic", "ADD", etc. are often simply people who learn differently.

like winston churchill, for example, or michelangelo, or walt disney.

people who have the label "learning disabilities" (or dyslexia, or ADD) are usually just people who have different learning styles. i want to help celebrate their way of learning, educate the world on how they experience life, advocate for them and put in place resources that will help them navigate our education system.

move parenting into the world of paid work

Most work is monetarily valued.  More important work is valued higher as is more difficult work.  For too long we have justified unpaid parenting by lack of money, by individual or spousal responsibility, by historical and religous custom and various other social constructs.  It is time and Canada can lead this.  I would like to organize with others to move in this direction.

Remembering Mom and Dad

Grieve

Three years ago this autumn, my mom called from Bancroft and told me she'd been to see the doctor; she was getting some tests back shortly for some swelling in her abdomen. Nothing to worry about, she said, but there was an edge to her voice and she seemed distracted.

Within three months, both she and my father – who had been living with prostate and bone cancer for a decade – had died.
