got hats?
There are some very cold people in our community right now. I have some warm clothes I could donate but no way to get them to the shelters. I am sure I am not the only one. So, I was wringing my hands trying to figure out a way around this. Then it hit me! I have been calling around local businesses to see who might lend me a suitable vehicle so I could go directly to people's homes, collect donations and then make sure that they get to where they need to go.
Do you have any warm clothes you like to see go to people in Vancouver shelters right now but just can't get to a shelter yourself?
I'd like to get a sense of how many people are in that boat. If this sounds like you please reply with what you would like to donate here so I can get a sense of numbers.

Hi Kate:
I think I can come up with some useful items. The other idea I had is that I might try to do a "donation drive" at my work to see if others there have any items they could give to those that need them.
Awesome idea Kate!

In addition to the people
In addition to the people who have pledged to take part in the 'got hats' campaign, I have received several messages offline including one from the YMCA thrift shop on Main Street who have pledged to donate some stuff, too. I would really like to be able to say that I have a car to use! If anyone has any leads on a suitable car, please contact me. We need one with snow tires. People are also talking about this initiative in the Vancouver blogosphere. Indiescribe

Thanks so much for sending this and offering the opportunity to help. I've passed your message on to several listservs as well as several dozen individuals. I also have a very warm, virtually unused (but quite small) down jacket to offer (and can probably search out a few other things). Please feel free to get in touch with me.

Hi Kate, Thanks so much for
Hi Kate,
Thanks so much for getting this accomplished, great work! I am on Vancouver Island in Nanaimo & I have tried several times to find out where to donate items so the shelters or people actually on the street will receive them. I am always told to take them to the thrift stores. I have a need for these 'boutiques' myself & I have seen first hand that others, who can afford to buy things will buy items there & re-sell them at flea markets etc... It really is a shame the things that people resort to. I am just grateful for the things I do have.
If you have any info on how one could get some warm items to shelters & people outside but over here in Nanaimo, I would be ever so grateful. I am sure I could find a way to get things there even if I have to send them along with someone else.
These are desperate times & choices need to be made. Some choose to eat, then have to live outside or like me, have a roof but not so much to eat especially as I have a service dog that needs me too. Unfortunately & sadly, others don't have a choice either way. I consider myself lucky!!
Sorry for the novel! Thanks again & keep doing what you are doing. When some people say they can't pay you back, maybe you could ask them to just "pay it forwards'!
Cheers, Ali
Hi Kate, Just wanted
Hi Kate,
Just wanted to know how long you will be collecting clothes, blankets, etc for the homeless?
I live in South Delta, Tsw Ladner area. I have a few things to donate, but I don't want to give them to a thrift shop, value village, or anything like that as people have to pay for these necessary items. It's not fair, and I want to help. If you know of any shelters closer to me, please let me know.
Have you received anything from our present government personel? Probably not!
Anyhow, I want to help, let me know. I'm so glad you are doing this, I needed a contact, and you came along, GREAT!
Thanks,
Beverly Dohm

Hi TraceyB from the VRC - I live near 12th and Sophia, so will rifle through our warm clothes and blankets at home and find something to drop off tonight. I've also asked a few neighbourhood friends to contribute to this.
Hi everyone. Last night was
Hi everyone. Last night was wonderful. Gab, another volunteer and I collected over 25 bags of clothes, blankets, scarves and other warm things and delivered them to Triage a shelter in the DTES. I'll have some pictures and more details for you in an upcoming post. For now I will say that word is spreading, and fast: we had the film crew at Global TV following us around at one point they did a wonderful story on us that aired last night, this morning and will air again at noon today. We also met with The Province and an item appears in today's Globe and Mail.
It was the most fun I have had in a long time. We drank hot chocolate to keep warm, laughed and exchanged smiles with all the people we picked up things from. One of the highlights was the actual delivery itself. In the wee hours of the morning we arrived at the shelter with our delivery, a couple of the shelter residents excitedly helped us unload the truck, barely able to carry a bag up the stairs without grabbing a toque or blanket to cover up with (pictures are coming). They were delighted...and notably warmer.
Lets keep this going. I encourage you to connect with each other to make this happen. I noticed a couple of comments on this thread were from people branching off to do their own pick ups to get more warm clothes to people in need. One was from sherrett and another from phil. It sounds like they would like to be contacted about picking up your warm clothes donations, so please do so.
I've got so many clothes
I've got so many clothes that I'm going to bag up in the morning and donate. Mostly sweaters and fleeces. She doesnt know it yet, but my moms going to help me carry them out and down to the shelter.
